Unfortunately, most directors and top managers disregard the fact that their company might be seen as performing poorly in terms of information security. Most of them are not aware of the fact that industrial espionage is here to stay and is becoming increasingly sophisticated.

Meanwhile, the damage caused by eavesdropping is difficult to assess. The R&D sector is a good example. Many large firms don’t even employ an information security officer.

If you are the leader of a company:

- You should be aware of the scenarios in which you might expect illegal information gathering.
- You should know the possible M.O.s.
- You should also note that this is a higly specialised field, therefore a lack of knowledge is not necessarily the fault of the security chief.
- After developing an optimal level of security, you have to understand the principles of responsibility regarding your information. It’s important to know that a protected courtroom alone will not provide full safety. The top manager should know how to operate it and how to run the security protocol.
- You should only be working with companies owning a government licence (MKEH), a certification that proves reliability (AH) and the most up-to-date inventory of professional equipment.
- It might be worthwhile to familiarise oneself with the principles of safe communication (telephone, public networks, etc.)
